i think it's fair to say that the newtown massacre broke everyone's heart. but i think we need to remind people that during columbine back in 1999, there was an armed guard at the school. it did nothing to stop that shooting. i'm curious, what is it about what you're doing that will be any different? >> there was an armed guard but there was no arm ed teacher. the guard was taken out early on. thereby leaving the entire school open to the madman, to the actual two shooters. it's not arming teachers. we're simply not taking that ability of lawful self-defense. you're restricted in few places to carry. a school is not one of them. this isn't anything new. we never had a problem. >> but the larger question then is more really about gun control. are more guns the answer or are fewer guns the answer? and the other thing that i want to point out is teachers, of course, are equipped to teach. they are trained to teach. not necessarily trained and equipped to fire guns. so my question is, should it really be the teacher's responsibility to learn how to shoot a gun w

"the mass kwer in newtown, connecticut, remains atop our minds. readers are keenly interested to know about who owns guns in their neighborhood." brian todd joins me now. you talked to gun owners about this issue. what did they say? >> there's a lot of fallout over this map. when you work this map on the interpret, all you have to do is click on the dots and the name and address of the permit holder pops up there. we went to a gun store in virginia. the manager did not want the store identified by name, but e we asked gun owners what they think of the map. take a listen. >> a couple reasons. obviously, gun ownership is personal. but the main concern i would have is there are a lot of gun thefts. so if your name comes up and your address and zip code comes up,people are going to know who are not the right people are going to want to break in and steel your guns. that would be a concern. you don't know if you're going to be home when that happens or a family member would be home when that happens. that would be my main concern. >> would you be less

>>> the school shooting in newtown, connecticut, is a sobering reminder that sometimes guns fall in to the hands of people who should not have them. but what if there was a way to find out exactly who in your neighborhood owns a gun? the journal news, a local newspaper in new york city published a map of the names and addresses of every person who holds a gun permit. as you can see, the map is made up of tens of thousands of dots representing people who own gun permits in westchester county. some people are furious. so is this fair game for anyone wanting to exercise the 2nd amendment right or is it an outrageous invasion of privacy. i have to say this wrang ls for me. no matter where you stand on the debate, publishing names and home addresses in this context is really inappropriate. and look. i understand that a lot of the information is publicly available if you go out and search for it but to me this smacks of sort of naming and shaming responsible gun owners and making them seem as if they're criminals and frankly, you know, i think this is a mistake that liberals make in this deb
